Article: Couples Improve With Age

Posted by Valerie Russell

Here's a link to an article I found:

http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2008-09-03-marriage-later-years_N.htm

This article talks about the changes in marriage that happen when you get older. Although it was depressing for me to think about the stresses of middle age with teenagers in the house and being frustrated that my husband isn’t doing more to help, it did give some hope that the picture brightens as the kids grow up. I would hope that my marriage doesn’t suck the whole time we’re raising kids, but through the hard times I will kind of see a light at the end of the tunnel. I hope that I can stay close to my husband during the busy middle years though, so that when we have all the kids out of the house and we retire then we’ll still be close to one another.

Utah Census

There was an interesting article in Deseret News yesterday (Tuesday, Sept 22) regarding the statistics for the state of Utah in comparison to the Nation. Here are a few that are relevant to our class:

In the section headed "Families"
Age at first marriage for women: 23.5 (Utah) 26.2 (National) Utah has the lowest age in the Nation. (It is 26.1 for men in Utah but the article didn't give the National average.) The 2000-03 census had the age for women as 21.9 years and 23.9 years for men - Utah is slowly getting closer to the National average and people are waiting to get married.
Women ages 15 to 50 who gave birth in the last year: 82.0 per 1,000 (Utah) 58.0 per 1,000 (Nation) Utah is the highest in the Nation.
Marriages in the past year per 1,000 women: 28.4 (Utah) 17.9 (National) Utah is the highest in the Nation.
Households that are headed by married couples: 60.5% (Utah) 49.2% (National) Utah has the highest percentage in the Nation.

In the section headed "Relationships"
Ratio of unmarried men to women ages 15 to 44: 121.4 men per 100 women (Utah) 112.8 men to 100 women (National)
Divorces in past year per 1,000 women: 14.0 (Utah) 10.5 (National)
Divorces in past year per 1,000 men: 12.1 (Utah) 9.9 (National)
Interesting that the divorce rates are higher in Utah than the National average - but then more people are getting married.
